I decided to change my major at 12:06 a.m. in the middle of Davis Library.

I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to study; all I knew was that a change was needed—my grades were fine, but the work I was doing at that point just didn’t interest me enough. So, anxious and stressed, I opened the “Majors, Minors, and Concentrations” page and began browsing. It felt like I was back at square one. TBT to high school, am I right?

Wrong.

What I didn’t realize was how ready, willing, and helpful our academic advisers were at UNC. Within a week, they had helped me choose a major more suited to my interests and helped me with my next steps. Whether it was showing me the right courses to take step by step or simply assuring me that all of it was possible, advising was there for me. They had made a daunting transition almost seamless.

Since then, I’ve maintained constant contact with advising, even nominating my advisor for an award because they were just that helpful. Knowing that they have my best interests in mind makes Academic Advising such a valuable and reliable resource to use. A year ago, I would’ve thought of Academic Advising as something you only need when you’re struggling academically. Then again, a year ago, I was still in Davis Library late at night half-studying because I was only half-interested.

I’m happy to say I Thrive@Carolina because Academic Advising helped get me to where I am today.
